The following course comprises three modules of learning.

Module One: The Kookaberry is a digital system

The Kookaberry is introduced as a computer and digital system, and given context within its own ecosystem and Australian education. Learners will begin to use its basic features.

Module Two: Peripherals, apps & learning plans

Learners begin to combine the Kookaberry with different peripherals, learning practically about how sensors and computation combine to allow the exploration of data within our world.

Module Three: Preparing for the classroom

Learners explore examples of approaches to classroom lessons with the Kookaberry and consider what is possible for their own students. They are supported in designing their first lesson that includes the Kookaberry.

Required resources

As you will be working online for much of this course, you will need a Windows or Mac computer with an internet connection. A webcam with microphone will be required for any virtual conferencing sessions (these are embedded in some computers and most laptops). You will also require a Kookaberry Sample Kit or Basic Kit including all peripherals and accessories.

Required tasks completed

Completing this Introduction to the Kookaberry course will contribute five (5) hours of PL addressing 2.1.2 and 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

To meet the requirements of this accreditation course, all activities, surveys, assessment questions and uploads must be completed; in particular:

  • short answers in each section (multiple choice or between one word and one sentence)
  • long-answers in each section (between one sentence and two paragraphs)
  • one-page lesson plan using the Kookaberry, differentiated for your students and relevant to your curriculum area
  • Pre-PL survey
  • 1-hour mid-point check-in survey
  • 2-hour mid-point check-in survey
  • 3-hour mid-point check-in survey
  • PL completion survey

Short answer questions allow the learner to respond quickly while checking for their understanding of the concepts or that they were able to follow the hands-on instructions.

Long answer questions are usually focused on classroom implementation of the learning, including:

  • How the activities and concepts might be applied to teaching curricula outcomes
  • How activities might be differentiated for stages of learning, subjects & learning needs
  • What students might be able to infer from data
  • How classroom management might impact decisions.

Check-in surveys are made to be as short as possible while providing enough information for SLAM Education to respond accordingly to the needs of the learner if additional help is required. They are also an opportunity to recommend an online virtual support session.
