The Kookaberry
The Kookaberry is a low cost open source technology platform designed by the AustSTEM Foundation to make it easier for primary school teachers and their students to teach STEM and bring the digital world to life in their classrooms.
It is simple to use, requires no coding experience, Internet, or Wi-Fi, and brings the Internet of Things and real-world data into experiential learning across the curriculum
Its pre-loaded apps and easily connected low cost input and output devices (peripherals) allow students to instantly measure, display, and record all sorts of data (eg, temperature, humidity, voltage, light, events); and control peripherals (eg, LED’s, motors, servos, switches).
Once the purpose of a particular peripheral or app has been demonstrated experientially, the underlying MicroPython programmes can be displayed, explained, and modified using the KookaSuite code editors (both visual and text).
The Kookaberry’s low cost, simplicity and robust design, together with its datalogging capability, screen display, wireless connectivity, and very inexpensive sensors, also makes it a popular platform for secondary and tertiary STEM projects and science experiments.
